Performance Enhancing Drug Tests

Lately, the topic of performance enhancing drugs (PEDs) and the repercussions for athletes who are caught using them has been a central theme in the mainstream media. While it may give athletes a competitive edge, there are significant risks as well. Furthermore, they are illegal and flat out dangerous.

Consider the following performance-enhancing drugs that athletes commonly take to get an edge on the competition:

Human Growth Hormone (HGH) is a naturally occurring substance that facilitates cellular regeneration. When used as a supplement it can enhance athletic performance (most notably in males) but has the side effect of raising hormones up to 100x above their normal levels. After stopping treatment, former users ironically are afflicted with low stamina.

Anabolic steroids are the most common PEDs that people hear about on the news and the most dangerous. Their goal is to increase protein in cells to enhance physical development. Long-term use can create hypertension and lead to stroke or heart attack. Research links anabolic steroids to gynecomastia -- breast development in men -- and testicular atrophy (testicles can shrink to the size of peanuts). While their muscles may be big, clearly most men would not be pleased with either of those side effects.

RaBu Diagnostic can test for anabolic steroids in two ways. Steroid use is a contentious issue in both amateur and professional sports however we are capable of testing for all levels of competition. Both tests inspect the levels of hormones and what are called metabolites to find out exactly what has been consumed. Some steroid compounds include the following drugs that can then be recombined to sell to athletes.

  • Boldenone - brand names: Equipoise and Ultragan, available primarily for veterinary use.
  • Methandienone - brand names: Averbol and Danabol, used by bodybuilders to increase protein synthesis.
  • Methyltestosterone - brand names; Android, Testred, and Virilon, prescribed for men with testosterone deficiency.
  • Nandrolone (19-Nortestosterone) - brand name: Deca-Durabolin, offered for the treatment of osteoporosis.
  • Oxandrolone - brand name: Anavar, used as a treatment for HIV muscle wasting and osteoporosis.
  • Oxymetholone - brand names: Anadrol and Anapolon, prescribed to treat osteoporosis and anemia.
  • Stanozolol - brand name: Winstrol, used to treat hereditary angioedema and anemia.
  • Probenecid - brand name: Probalan, prescribed as a treatment for gout.
  • Clenbuterol - brand names: Spiropent and Ventipulmin, often prescribed as a bronchodilator.
