Rohypnol, a drug that played a prominent role in the blockbuster movie “The Hangover,” is the brand name for Flunitrazepam, colloquially known as the date drug Roofies. What many people do not know is that this drug is sometimes legally prescribed by doctors as a temporary solution to treat insomnia. It has also been used as pre-medication in surgery. Without a prescription, it is illegal in the U.S.
Rohypnol is a benzodiazepine similar to Valium, Xanax and Librium. However, as a sedative, it is seven to ten times more powerful than the already strong Valium. Rohypnol’s function is to depress the central nervous system.
Common street names for flunitrazepam include the following:
Dangers and overdose risk:
Rohypnol is most commonly known as a date rape drug, someone with ill intent can slip it into an unsuspecting woman or man’s drink at a party. After it has been ingested, people will become very friendly and social and not remember what happened the next morning. Since Rohypnol causes amnesia, victims don’t remember the details of the attack and are unable to identify and therefore punish perpetrators.
Before 1997, Rohypnol did not have a taste or an odor. In 1997, it was restructured to turn a light colored drink blue. This was done specifically to prevent accidental ingestion by unsuspecting women in social situations. However, standard versions of the drug don’t contain this light blue dye which makes it possible that it’s still being used as a date rape drug.
Rohypnol is known primarily as a date rape drug, yet it can be abused for other reasons. Cocaine and heroin addicts are known to use it, as are college students, street gang members, rave partiers, and high school students all trying to enhance heroin and coke highs. It is usually taken orally and combined with alcohol but it can be snorted as well.
Frequent abuse of Rohypnol can create stomach problems, slurred speech, a lack of coordination/fine motor control, and dizziness. High concentrations of the drug can even cause respiratory problems leading to death.
